Jews of Lisbon

Our Lisbon Jewish tour is about history, customs and traditions of a Jewish past. Get a different glance through our Jewish tours in Lisbon.

Our tour will show you that after the conquest, Christian Lisbon maintained neighbourhoods where mostly people from other religions lived. In addition to Mouraria (Moors), which still exists today, Lisbon had at least four Jewish quarters that we will visit on our tour. However over centuries they have lived almost side by side, from thirteenth to fifteenth century.

Our Jewish Lisbon cultural heritage tour is about discovering iconic places and people of Lisbon from a Jewish perspective. We will share with you by this tour:

In Middle Ages, Jews played an important role on administration, urban evolution and Lisbon commercial business. Lisbon had four Jewish Quarters and many families lived outside areas assigned to Jews, a sign of population dimension that this community reached on 15th century.

Jewish Presence in Lisbon

This tour also about Lisbon Jewish Presence, shows us that jewries occupied a privileged area of Lisbon. Present throughout the kingdom, Jews achieved significant economic, social, fiscal and cultural relevance.

Usually associated with urban environment, they settled in areas with strong identity. Jewries or, more simply, Jewish quarters or Jewish streets. But Jewish minority of urban Lisbon tended to take on great resemblance. Stemming from similar choices as to its locations and orientations.

Lisbon Jewish tour continues now through Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest quarter was once a Jewish neighborhood. Along, Rua da Judiaria, is still visible where was located the Synagogue as well as the Rabbi house. These are some remains of Alfama Jewish past. Jews have lived inside this Lisbon area until it’s expulsion in 1496.

Next, our tour continues at Belem quarter to visit Jeronimos Monastery, Belem Tower, and the Monument to Discoveries.

Our day tour ends with an internationally known delicacy –  “pastel de Belem,” Lisbon’s delicious custard pastry, and our thanks for visiting Jewish Lisbon.
