Our Jewish tours Portugal in Alentejo depicts the widest region of Portugal. The landscape, marked by the plain, is dotted with elevations that were once used for the construction of fortified castros. Today they offer us stunning landscapes, such as the village of Monsaraz.

Castles and fortified villages are testimony of the occupation of the territory by different peoples and the need to populate and defend it. However, it was this multiplicity that contributed to the Alentejo’s identity, evident in the traditions, such as the cante, declared Immaterial Heritage of Humanity, and the tolerance of its people.

With our private tours in Alentejo, we intent to provide you a journey through history and memory of a past that marks the present. The memory of a Jewish Alentejo is about lifes, stories, legends and traditions.

Memories of a Jewish Alentejo

We leave Lisbon on a Jewish southeast route to Alentejo, where centuries ago Jews have been settled down in this vast region that offerd them, wine, agriculture, olive oil, cork and its gastronomy.

The Jewish presence in this region has been cemented in the last years of the 15th century. Its influence from then on is still evident today, whether in architecture or in the professions of craftsmen or merchants.

Driving through landscapes of a countryside dotted with castles and cork trees, you will discover the medieval Jewish Sepahrdic heritage of Alentejo. The white villages and ancestral houses are the keepers of a Jewish legacy in this region throughout centuries.

Our experience is about identifying the testemonies of a relegion silenced by persecution and forced conversion, and to give you the inspiration to discover history in cheese, bread, wine, lamb and olive oils.

Be part of this Jewish past by walking in the footsteps of local culture and explore with our tours the genuine people of Portugal.
