Discover with Real Embrace Portugal, the heritage of tile art in Lisbon and surroundings. Since the Islamic influence, to the masters cycle (XVIII century), we leave to the discovery of one of the identifying elements of Portuguese culture.

Our journey has its beginning in Alfama, historic district, which offers us a wealth and iconographical diversity. Lose and find yourself in this tile registry, in its historical and cultural originality, which expresses

the mentality and the devotion of a people, whether in religious panels which we highlight the little souls, as in unholy themes. Note also the tiles facade in urban and religious buildings.

The visit continues in the National Tile Museum, one of the most important museums of pottery in the world. The blue tiles and gilded church, of the former convent, Mother of God, gives full meaning to the expression “gold over blue” as a synonym for perfection.

Do not miss the great production of Portuguese tile attributed to Gabriel del Barco, 1700, and that gives us its 23 meters long panoramic Lisbon before the 1755 earthquake.

In the afternoon we offer two options:

Option 1 :

Cross the river and we head to Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, a visit to Quinta da Bacalhoa and its palace, one of the rare examples of Renaissance civil architecture in Portugal with beautiful panels of tiles.

The visit will be for those interested, enriched with excellent wine tasting.

The journey will end in the tile art factory where, in addition to learning the techniques of manual production, you can experience the hand-crafting of traditional pieces and still create your own tile.

Option 2:

Visit to the town of Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Our journey through the history of tile leads us to the National Palace that since the fourteenth century, is a relevant scenario of events and receptions. In this building of great historical richness, we will find different techniques of tile art.

Our afternoon will continue through the beautiful town of Sintra, where you have the opportunity to experience the delicious travesseiros ou queijadas of Sintra, in the old factory Constance Piriquita.
